It's easier to get forgiveness than persimmons.

[Update: this was a typo for a related phrase that I thought was so marvelous that I'd make a livejournal post. But yes, I do like persimmons. And they're in season right now.]

I've got some persimmons if you'd like one. :)

You're crazy. At my farmer's market right now, I can't get anything BUT persimmons.

Such a lovely word... persimmons...
isn't it?

heh. it was an early typo for "permission". And I thought it was such a marvelous error that I kept it.

And what sparked the original quote?

I was discussing giving a section of a corpus of spoken English to a colleague so she could use it in her research.

If you follow this simple algorithm, you will see that it is, in fact, at least as easy to get persimmons as forgiveness:

  1. Steal persimmons.
  2. Voice contrition.
  3. Repeat.

It should be obvious that this procedure will gain you persimmons on every iteration, but forgiveness only some of the time. Furthermore, I expect that as the procedure is repeated, the forgiveness:persimmons ratio will decrease rapidly, particularly if it is carried out in a relatively small area.
