final DSL modem issue update

The issue seems to be that IPv6 requests hork up the DSL modem's DNS. If I tell firefox not to use IPv6 for DNS (via about:config, setting network.dns.disableIPv6 to true), then everything works -- so long as it's running through Firefox. The aboutconfig extension for Thunderbird works to get at the same settings for email.

I'd like to disable IPv6 overall for my Ubuntu laptop and for imtboo's Windows XP laptop. On Ubuntu, it's editing /etc/modprobe.d/bad_list to include the line alias net-pf-10 off (for reasons I can't understand but cargo-culted off the web), but I haven't figured out how to do that for Windows XP (is it possible?).

Looks like there's still some kinks to be ironed out of the IPv6 rollout.

house progress -- code complete*

This morning, imtboo and I figured out where the last few pieces of big furniture are going in our beautiful view-laden sunny apartment. We actually have two "living rooms" -- one just steps from our desks: more active and alert, with morning sun and crimson-and-bamboo square cushions on the floor; and one close to the kitchen, more cozy and relaxing, with a wooden coffeetable, a corner curl-up-and-listen-to-music quarter-wedge couch piled with cushions, where we can look at the view, listen to music, or watch movies.

Both rooms have views of the sunset, the Space Needle, and the Olympics (when the weather is such that you can see). We need a panorama picture (perhaps I can do something with imtboo's camera and hugin -- thanks to evan for the tip).

We're still missing a few pieces of furniture, but I think the big picture is all solid. We'll settle a little more, hang pictures and fill bookshelves, and we have a few bookshelves and endtables still to find, but I think that this morning's work was very satisfying to us both. The apartment is beautiful. It feels good to make these decisions together with the Boo, and I can't wait until it's something we can share with our friends as well.

*"code complete" is a bit of computer programmer's jargon for "all the pieces are there, but polishing and bugfixing still remains".
