final DSL modem issue update

trocheeThe issue seems to be that IPv6 requests hork up the DSL modem's DNS. If I tell firefox not to use IPv6 for DNS (via about:config, setting network.dns.disableIPv6 to true), then everything works -- so long as it's running through Firefox. The aboutconfig extension for Thunderbird works to get at the same settings for email.

imtboo's Windows XP laptop. On Ubuntu, it's editing /etc/modprobe.d/bad_list to include the line alias net-pf-10 off (for reasons I can't understand but cargo-culted off the web), but I haven't figured out how to do that for Windows XP (is it possible?).
