Okay, D. and I have been looking for apartments in San Francisco. We're kinda sticker-shocked, of course, but we're trying to get all our information the best together we can.

And we just discovered the Nob Hill neighborhood on Craig's List. We can see that it's quite dense -- tenth and twelfth-floor apartments are common, but we've been thinking: we are moving to a big city -- density is to be expected.

So I'm just wondering: is there something we really want to avoid about that neighborhood? Is it raging full of coke fiends, or crackheads, or is it all yuppie scum? Of course, there are other districts we like too -- but the rents seem so much higher for a similar-sized apartment elsewhere, as compared to Nob Hill, at least in our range (1750-2300 or so).

Am I missing something?

That's behind the Castro, no? From what I remember, that's a really nice place. Most places but the tenderloin and maybe chinatown are pretty nice in SF in my experience. And most places are totally walkable and close to everything.

Behind Castro is Noe Valley. Nob Hill is parallel Van Ness ave.

I don't know that neighborhood because nobody I know lives there. That may be an anti-recommendation itself. Some other possible negatives: poor access to public transit (recall that the Seattle bus system is quite good compared to most cities including SF); proximity to financial district may mean financial douchebags. But I can't recall any real red flags. Maybe rent's low because it's close to the tenderloin or union square?

Nob Hill is quite nice and has excellent access to public transit. "Lower Nob Hill" is on the Tenderloin border, and is artsy and improving but still a little gritty. If you lived there, you would probably take a MUNI line to Caltrain for your commute. It's a terrible neighborhood in which to have a car if you don't get a parking spot with your apartment.

and yes -- as D mentioned above -- not that excited about getting a car, if we can avoid it. Currently don't have one and we'd kinda like to keep it that way. :)

Pick up the authentic Muni Map, they're available at the Visitor's center at the Powell street station. I think it not only shows what lil' alleyways there are, it may well also show the direction in which one can or cannot make turns, which can be important downtown. Oh, and 3-1-1 is the local "Where is, how do I?" for S.F. only.

4-1-1, I mainly use Google, 'cause it's free on cell phones but some times it really has trouble figuring out what one is saying, but it does include addresses and free forwarding of the call to what you've chosen.

If you run into something inexplicable, ask, I usually have or know where to get a solid answer for things around here.
