yay! that was a good suggestion (and it worked -- I'm the king of good suggestions that don't, so I appreciate the difference).

I still think it's a bug in bibtex, but now I know why it's not all over the internets.

I'm very glad it worked! (I wasn't actually able to replicate the bug, so the fact that {\~n} worked okay for me didn't make me as sure as I would have liked to be that it would work for you....)
