nerds on fire

I am mildly hooked on Frets on Fire, a Guitar Hero open source project.

D. has photo documentation of me with my keyboard sideways in my lap, rocking out on the right shift key. I've never played Guitar Hero, but I'm sold on the game concept in a big way, and I may end up buying the GH games. Such a difference from the big two game models (puzzles and violence!), or the trailing third (fast-twitch geometry, e.g. Tetris and Katamari Damacy). The addition of music makes this a very different sort of game than Tetris; much closer to Dance Dance Revolution than anything else I can think of.

Ha!

My roomie, [livejournal.com profile] phil_g, has been obsessing over that game. What he found out was that it's hard to import songs from GH dvds, but there are torrents avail out there with the songs. Also, you should load the optional packages as well, and turn down the rhythm guitar section, and then it will work.

"Optional packages"? What does that mean?

And it seems to run just fine for me, but I am not sure I need to turn down the rhythm guitar (they're all at 11 - hah - except for the "screw-up noises").

I discovered the torrents already. shiny...

He runs Debian, and he needed to load all the packages including non-required ones in order for the game to detect which section is which. In GH2 games there is a second player rhythm section, but FoF doesn't have 2 player, so for those songs, turning down the rhythm section makes the song normal.

ahah. I don't have the GH2 songs so I hadn't found this problem yet. I run Ubuntu, and I haven't found what packages are optional yet but I'll check.
