Oo. I know this one firsthand. I'm saving it here because it's naming something I've had my whole life. I avoid trying because I might not be good at it, because I can't stand not being good at something... but by not trying I never get the started-out-bad-and-got-better effects, unless I'm pushed into it by other factors.

Remember that you HAVE had some experiences of doing this, though. I'm thinking of long distance running in high school. Some art projects? Public speaking? Yes, you were pushed, but you did have the experiences. I'll bet you can build on that.
