happily busy
haven't posted much. Still at the lab because I've had a busy day in and out of the office.
Lots going on, but good stuff!
imtboo and I have mailed our save-the-date cards (well, most of them).
I spent several hours on Sunday cleaning out our oversized closet. It could really be a small office;
imtboo has half-joked about making it into a darkroom and I'm not so sure it couldn't. She and I went for a nice walk after I was done, to enjoy the first day of spring -- strictly speaking, it was the fifth or so, but meteorologically we hadn't had any sun at all, so it was nice to walk out around Capitol Hill and Volunteer Park as the sun set.
I'm making slow progress on my generals paper. At least there's progress. I'm making more progress with Okami (thanks for nothing,
blackwingedboy!), but -- more seriously -- it's a great game and I haven't been wasting all my time with it, merely enjoying the time I do spend.
imtboo asked me about what was happening in the game, and I cracked her up because I apparently delivered a psychological assessment of myself by describing the process: ("I'm currently collecting icons of evil -- e.g. the Lips of Ice -- to summon the demon Orochi in order to defeat him.")
French class has begun again today with the new quarter; my instructor is a fellow linguistics grad student; since I'm taking the class pass-fail this is not a conflict or even a big deal -- I barely know him. The class looks like continued fun too; I discovered today that the text we're using originated as an FSL text used in France, which explains why the English in the text is so limited -- and why it feels so practical and useful.
Back to work for another few minutes, then home!

Dell...web 2.0 petards?
(Anonymous) 2007-03-29 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)Hope you had a chance to catch up on Dell's ideastorm and that you also were one of the 100,000+ who took part in survey on some of the factors impacting how best to move forward and deliver Linux on desktops and laptops.
Wanted to follow up with you since we have now implemented a number of the community's suggestions such as the demote button, launched direct2dell in chinese, extended upgrade path for xps 700 customers, dedicated staff to improving the "help me choose" section of dell.com, as just a few examples and we are working on more. Also, yesterday we said we will offer customers expanded choices of desktops and notebooks with Linux.
There are some product design and configuration things we are still working through with our engineers, as well testing and driver compatability, and we have yet to finalize the Linux version to be offered....but the train is on the track to deliver what has been called for. Details are here:
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/ideastorm/ideasinaction?c=us&l=en&s=gen and at www.direct2dell.com
We will continue to provide updates in the coming weeks that includes detailed information on which systems we will offer, our testing and certification efforts, and the Linux distribution(s) that will be available.
Change does not always happen overnight and ships don't turn on a dime, but in a few weeks, think we have stepped up to the plate. Lots of others are noting that we seem to be listening and delivering, but I am wondering what you think? Is Dell still simply being hoisted on its own petard? Or are we making progress? Look forward to your feedback.
