I just got a jaywalking ticket for running across Broadway in the crosswalk with no traffic coming, in order to catch a bus. The cops pulled their car out around the corner and honked at me.

and of course I missed the bus while they wrote me up. And then I missed one of my favorite professor's talks.

it's $46, which is almost not worth fighting. I am fairly sure that if I went to court over this, the mitigation would reduce it hugely (or throw it out). But I'd really rather not.

gah. some days it would have been better to stay home.

Gah, indeed! I don't think I've ever heard of anyone actually getting a ticket for jaywalking before.

And Broadway, of all places, given the depth and breadth of all kinds of goings on and offenses seems like the LAST place in the city where jaywalking would be a high-priority.

Ticket quota I'd wager.

They actually give tickets for jaywalking? Wow! Do they also give tickets for cars that don't stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk? Now in Atlanta that would really be a startling event!

Seattle cops have had a chip on their shoulder since the WTO in 1999, as I understand it. I'm not the only person I know in Seattle to get a jaywalking ticket, either.

I'm particularly annoyed for getting a ticket for such a safe jaywalking -- I see people jaywalk staggering drunk in the middle of the block, into traffic, but I was in the crosswalk, with no traffic, and I'd looked both ways (sober, too!).

ah well. not much to do about it though.

And seriously. Broadway's got lots of people who need help, a lot more than they need tickets for jaywalking in the crosswalk.

you know, I've never seen anyone get a ticket for stopping across the crosswalk, either -- and that happens all the time.

I tend to issue citizen's citations (aka "wagging my finger") at people doing that, but other than that, they get off easy.

I've heard that Seattle cops are horrible about jaywalking tickets. What a drag. I didn't know crossing in a crosswalk with no traffic was still considered jaywalking though!

it's been much longer than since the wto.
i got my first jaywalking ticket here in 1995.

it's the law and they are stinkers about it.

well, in Seattle , people are incredibly dilligent at stopping for pedestrians. almost too much sometimes !
you have one step in the street and everyone stops.
i suppose it's nice.
i personally prefer the mess of places like paris and ny city when it comes to traffic. maybe it's more like the ocean: unpredictable. ;)
