Frank Miller is a Dick

For those who don't know the players, Frank Miller, comics legend (creator of The Dark Knight Returns), has lost his mind in the cranky-misogynist-curmudgeon direction, much like Dave Sim. Miller's new project is (no shit) Batman vs. Al Qaeda, and is apparently entirely without irony.

And to add insult to injury, Miller got to be the Morning Edition "This I Believe" essayist on September 11. And it's awful. I am ashamed of NPR, and I'm ashamed of comics as a culture (though I'm not surprised by it). andiwatson (an amazing man) quotes exactly the right words here:

Miller: "Imagining human villainy in all its forms. Now the real thing had shown up. The real thing murdered my neighbors. In my city. In my country."
Now put those words into the mouth of an Iraqi insurgent...

no, it's never been all that liberal (except, as you note, in the "debauched depraved" sense of liberal that the Rush types would have us believe is the Liberal Elite).

And it's not really new to Miller, either: Dark Knight, like Give Me Liberty, can be read as an fantasist argument against totalitarianism or (as Miller probably intended) as a Randian wank-off celebrating the Real Men who are willing to break heads in the Underclass for a Better World Even If It Hurts.

But I liked my illusion that it wasn't about that.
