Hey
beckyb and the other faculty who read this, you might be interested in a paper mentioned on WorldChanging: "Teaching Societal and Ethical Implications of Nanotechnology to Engineering Students through Science Fiction".
They had them read Neal Stephenson, among others. (the WorldChanging reviewer also suggests Linda Nagata, which I agree with.)
Also, Gratuitous Icon Post thanks to

Date: 2005-12-06 05:00 am (UTC)I think for my final exam in my Computers in Society class, I'm going to make them watch Wargames and write a 15 minute essay. For the vast majority of the class, the final won't affect their grade anyway. The movie is 114 minutes so it would be cool if I could find something that was 90 minutes (and keep within my allotted 2 hours). When they see the movie they have to watch, I don't think they'll mind staying a little longer.

Date: 2005-12-06 05:03 am (UTC)The only Law and Order* series i watch, and it's entirely because Goren is such a wonderfully prickly man. Oh, and Carver, much for the same reason. It makes me sad that they seem to be phasing Goren and Alex** out. I imagine because he wants to do something else, and she wants to spend time with her kid.
* Or as my sister says, "dunh-dunh"
** I have no idea how to spell her last name
