I can hear it now... "They better not have any of those coloreds writing civil rights stories without tellin' us! Even if they got one of those crazy names like Lateefah, that ain't good enough to keep us informed. We even need a picture of 'em, to see if they's the good civilized type or the less civilized, white-woman-rapin' type."
(And, for the record, real conservatives like myself don't give a damn what you do in your bedroom. We only care that the government keeps its dirty paws out of everyone's affairs and that it doesn't piss away everyone's money on stupid things like needlessly invading foreign countries. Basically, it's like Libertarianism, but with fire departments and roads and stuff. Unlike hard-core Libertarians, we either learned to share in Kindergarten, or think Ayn Rand is full of shit, or both.)
and, from the other point of view, some hope for me, too, when I find myself wishing for more Eisenhower/McCain Republicans. When Old Republicanism (slogan: Not Overtly Evil) starts to look good to cranky radical lefties like me, you know we're in deep with the libertarian persecution-complex millennialist privatize-the-fire-department-because-we-won't-need-it-after-the-rapture crazies.
You're coming to much the same place from the exact opposite side, which amuses me greatly. Like i said elsewhere, i'll vote McCain or Democrat in 2008, in that order.
Most forms of radicalism smack of short-sighted idealism to me. If it's radical, it's probably novel, and if it's novel, it's probably a good idea to transition to it gradually or let someone else find zeroth-rev gotchas. See also: radical new Apple designs.
That said, i have many radical urges. But i consciously temper (most of) them as needed for either caution or compromise. I'm still struggling with it, but it seems to be a good approach overall.
