at the conference

I'm here in Vancouver. The conference is underway; I've seen thus far a talk by a True Believer in Old High AI, and a number of talks by discriminative-training whiz-kids. I'm a little jealous of these smarties.

motive_nuance is my roommate, along with someone else from my lab. I've also met a whole bunch of people who I haven't seen in a long time, so that's fun. Had lunch with an Oregon researcher who's doing some neat stuff with NLP analysis of Alzheimer's patients. One of the new faculty from my school has shown up -- I didn't expect to see him, but here he is -- and he didn't even know that I was giving a talk. Shame on me for not bragging enough in the department, apparently.

I have time to write this note because I am taking time out to charge my laptop before I give my talk. I'm a little nervous, but the talk is pretty good.

I have cell phone coverage, but it's roaming so it's very expensive. Email works, though. And after this afternoon's talk, I should be a little less stressed.
