classes begin

Classes began today. I had a class in historical/comparative linguistics and a class in shallow processing for NLP.

I think both classes are likely to be quite easy. I'm a little concerned that they may be *too* easy.

I have been busy catching up on email and other tasks associated with getting back into school; I am also preparing my talk for the conference next week. It has been hard to get excited about it.

Today I saw Hedda Gabler with imtboo, blackwingedboy and alexstx21. Wow. Very Dogma- style, and well-told story. Totally absorbing. I knew the play already and it still made me jump.

And as for your "easy" courses. #1 I imagine you will find a way to make them challenging and #2 doesn't that give you time to get the disertation going?

no, it doesn't give me time.

just being easy doesn't mean there isn't a lot of time involved in going to class and doing the reading and homeworks.

sorry for the tone in my earlier response to this.

I could indeed find a way to make them challenging, but three courses like that means seven class meetings a week to convince myself that the classes are actually interesting. That's too much, especially on top of research, and without much of a break after the MA was done, and especially if my research continues to be rehashing of the MA subject.

So as suggested in my later entries, I'm making an effort to do other things -- less work, and on a new subject instead of continuing to beat a dead horse -- this coming quarter.

Even if this quarter ends up with no additional new research, I would be okay with that. I told the linguistics prof I'm working with that I really need this quarter to be a rest/break, where I can throttle down and reorganize, and she seemed very receptive to that. And her topic (MT) might be smething I could do a PhD in.

I wasn't offended! I can really see how going to all those classes could suck up your time. I'm very pleased that you went and talked to advisors and professors and, of course, that they had the good sense to see that you are overqualified for the courses and are offering you independent work. You'll probably work even harder, but at least it will be productive work, not just wheel spinning.
