I'm skeptical. But the numbers are reasonable enough. Somebody asked "what's 'General American' mean?" and my guess is some combination of Western Coasts (with California cities as the canonical example) and "CNN/NPR" English (Eastern city-dwellers (New York, Boston, Atlanta, DC) who haven't lived in those cities their whole lives.

i suspect the Cali influence supposition here must hold true, as i'm third generation californian, and i rated a 75% in the "general american" category. and, i confess, i'm an npr-listening, news-magazine reading, tv-avoiding, college-educated, can't-we-all-get-along kinda liberal.

that surely plays into it, no? *giggle*

dad's from the midwest, and so i get a little of that midwest influence (10%) in there, too.

can't wait to learn more about real linguistics when i come up to visit you all. yay! two weeks.

heh, you probably think "caught" and "cot" are homophones, too.

Western coast and NPR liberal college educated are closely linked dialects right now.

would love to talk linguistics -- or at least linguisti-sparkly-bits -- with you.
