[geekery] advice on clean migration from Mozilla to Thunderbird-Firefox
I'm pleased with the Mozilla project's decision to pursue Firefox (a web browser) and Thunderbird (a mail client) independently. I like (and use) the combined Mozilla suite, but it's a beast and it'd be nice to be able to have just the mail browser and/or just the web browser, as separate tools.
Many friends recommend Firefox. I'm a Debian user, and I had no trouble installing both Firefox and Thunderbird. What I don't want to lose is the bookmarks, settings, addressbook, and filters from all the gobs of data I've tucked into the corners of my Mozilla browser. It looks like they have plans to do just this, but I can't tell if that's working. I think I won't be ready to move to the Thunderbird/Firefox duo until there's a clean and fairly tested import tool from SeaMonkey (the Mozilla suite).
Thunderbird has cool new features planned though, including an RSS reader, which means (combined with LogJam) I may not log into LJ via the web very often.
I guess what I would like to know is if anybody has made the switch to Thunderbird from Mozilla mail, and their experiences. Was it easy? How much clever hacking did you do, and was it successful? Should I wait, or should I just start hacking?
