May. 13th, 2009 10:35 amI know I am way late to the party on this, but as a comics nerd, a wannabe videogame nerd, and a white guy who tries to notice racism, I feel I ought to say something:
Much as the Prince of Persia teaser footage looks fun, and as much as Jake Gyllenhaal's a great actor, they couldn't find someone a little more fucking Persian to play "Prince Dastan" (and Gemma Arterton to play a princess named "Tamina"? seriously?) Compare the footage in the link above to the First Second publishers' 'trailer' made off the graphic novel adaptation of the stories.
Gyllenhaal is about as Persian as I am.1 It's about as plausible as WASPy Whiterson playing an adopted Egyptian Jew.
This ain't new, and it ain't a throwback either, of course: it happened to Airbender this year too.
1A little Wikipedia work shows that the Gyllenhaal siblings are half Swedenborgian, half Jew; I'm half Mayflower Unitarian agnostic, half Jewish commie atheist; point being: neither of us is particularly Persian.
