I am looking to buy a flatscreen monitor for my home workspace.

I think I would like 19" or more. Do any of the geeks out there have a recommendation for this sort of thing? I can get a 19" BENQ system from the university for ~$400, but they're out of stock and now that I browse Dell and Froogle that seems too expensive.

Any recommendations on vendor, brand, or model?

Well, I stick to Viewsonic and have for a few years now. But they aren't really cheap. I love em, though. Not sure I'd ever stray to another brand.

I recently got one of these, and I'm very happy with it. It has the same guts as the Apple 20" cinema display, but this is not common knowledge, so you can get them used for a lot cheaper.

I've been really happy with my Samsung SyncMaster 770. Five years of service and it's still performing like new.

19" is typically 12x10, same as 17". Personally, i'd either go 17" to save a few bucks or spend out a bit more for the extra resolution at 20".

Much as I detest dell, I've been happy with the 2001FP (NOT the 2005FPW, they reduced the resolution to make it 'wide screen').

I've seen it on froogle as low as $425 from dell.

so funny you should mention that! Yesterday I got a 20" Viewsonic at costco for ~$400. Pat says he really trusts the brand. Probably not the cheapest, but it's a trusted brand for what it's worth.

Oh, and it's very nice :)
